This is the first published book from Long Island native, Cybille St.Aude! It’s about a little girl named Elsie living in Haiti after the devastating 2010 Earthquake.

Elsie is illustrated by Marie Cecile Charlier and published by One Moore Book, a small company that publishes and distributes culturally sensitive and educational stories for children from countries with low literacy rates and underrepresented cultures. Elsie is in English with a few Kreyol words sprinkled in(with a glossary of course!). It’s the perfect way to introduce your kids to different cultures and languages! It’s idea for children reading along the 3-4th grade level.

Mia and I love this book, it’s well written and really is the perfect way to introduce Mia to Haitian culture. What I love the most is how there is a glossary in the back of the book that teaches us Haitan Kreyol with familiar English words. I tell Mia that I am not only her Momee but when we read Elsie I am her Manman (mother) as well. I highly recommend this book! It is never too early to introduce children to another language and never to late for us Momees : )

All of these words are seen throughout the book and the repetition helps us remember each word and its meaning.
