5 Things Every Homeowner Should Be Able to Spot (To Keep Their Home’s Safe)

When you are a homeowner, you need to be able to spot your property’s red flags, so that you can keep your home in good shape. That being the case, let’s take a look at some of the more common offenders, so you can be aware and stop the problems from developing into bigger disasters around the home.

1) The Telltale Drips

Nothing says, “We have a problem” quite like a miniature indoor waterfall cascading through your ceiling. Whether it’s a drip, a damp patch, or the sudden appearance of a tiny lagoon in your basement, water leaks can spiral from “Eh, that’s weird” to “Why is my couch floating away?” faster than you can say “plumber.” The moment you spot suspicious stains or hear a mysterious dripping noise that isn’t the dog slobbering in his bowl, investigate like your bank account depends on it—because it does.

2) The Unwanted Houseguests

Termites, mice, ants, roaches—oh my! If you’re like most people, the only six-legged creatures you want to see in your home come in the form of harmless ladybugs or cartoon characters on TV. But common house pests won’t politely knock before barging into your pantry. They can chew through wood, contaminate food, and generally make you regret every single leftover crumb on your kitchen counter. Keep an eye out for droppings (ew), gnaw marks, or exoskeletons. Spot anything suspicious? Time to call in the cavalry—or at least your friendly neighborhood exterminator.

3) The Creeping Cracks

Do you suddenly feel like your living room floor is sloping more dramatically than your favorite roller coaster ride? You might want to scope out the foundation. Cracks in walls, uneven floors, doors that won’t shut (even though you’re definitely turning the knob all the way)—these can all be signs your home’s “bones” are having a mid-life crisis. Don’t panic, but do call a professional to figure out if your house needs some structural TLC before it goes full Tower of Pisa.

4) The Wacky Flickers and Whiffs

Who needs flickering lights for spooky ambiance when you’ve got Halloween? If your light bulbs are doing an on-off strobe show or your circuit breaker keeps tripping, it might be a sign of faulty wiring. And while a little flicker might seem harmless, ignoring it could lead to something bigger, like an indoor fireworks display—minus the fun. On a serious note, never brush off weird gas smells or bizarre hissing sounds near appliances. Call an expert immediately—your nose hairs will thank you.

5) The Stuffy Stuff

Does your bedroom smell like a damp cave? Do you notice suspicious black or green spots in dark corners? Congratulations, you might be hosting your very own colony of mold. Not only is mold unappealing décor, but it can also wreak havoc on your health. Proper ventilation is key. Open windows, install exhaust fans, and consider a dehumidifier if you live in a swampy climate (or just feel like it).

Stay vigilant and keep a home sweet home!
