How cute are these to display on your table for spring? The best part is that they are yummy too…
This is a fun snack/ decoration that is so easy and fun to make that the kids can even do it ( with supervision of course! )
All you need is:
Bird Peeps ( I like the variety of colors )
4 cups of Dry Chow Mein noodles
3 tbsp. of unsalted butter
3 cups of mini marshmallows
1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
jelly beans
toothpicks
The 1st step is to put butter and marshmallows on low heat in a medium saucepan… this step takes about 8 minutes for the butter and marshmallows to melt together ( occasionally stirring)
Once the two are melted than add in your vanilla and stir it together for about 30 seconds
Then add in the 4 cups of dry chow mein noodles making sure you mix these up really good and have all the noodles covered in the marshmallow goodness ; ) as seen below
Coat your hands liberally with shortening, (butter doesn’t work as well) and have some nearby for re-coating. I got this idea from http://bakeat350.blogspot.com/2010/04/sweet-birds-nests.html and my hands felt great afterwards
Next step is to form a ball with the noodles …. you can make them any size you want ( but I suggest no bigger than a baseball )
Then use your thumb to make the center of your nest!
Once your nests have cooled then you can insert your jelly beans! ( some people like to use robin eggs ) and with a toothpick put a Momee peep bird on the side of your nest so she can watch over her eggs
You and your little one have now completed your adorable edible birds nests… Enjoy!
