Long Island Children’s Museum Celebrates Día de los Muertos with Family Activities Honoring Life, Loved Ones, and Cultural Traditions
November 1 celebration invites families to explore the traditions of Día de los Muertos through art, crafts, and meaningful opportunities to celebrate family connections.
Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM) invites families to celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on Sunday, November 1, from 11 am to 2 pm. Through hands-on activities, colorful crafts, and cultural traditions, families will discover meaningful ways to celebrate life, honor ancestors, and remember loved ones.
Presented in collaboration with the Association of Children’s Museums, Knology, and the New York Life Foundation, A Day of Healing Through Play will introduce families to the traditions of Día de los Muertos, a vibrant cultural celebration that honors the lives and legacies of those who have passed away. Families can participate in creative activities that celebrate the connections between generations and the memories that keep loved ones close.
Activities include:
  • Memory Jars: Decorate a memory jar to take home and fill with cherished memories of ancestors and loved ones who have passed away, as well as special moments shared with friends, family, and pets.
  • Calavera Face Painting (Maquillaje de Catrina y Catrín): Celebrate Día de los Muertos with face painting inspired by the joyful skeleton imagery associated with the holiday.
  • LICM’s Ofrenda: Contribute to the Museum’s ofrenda, a traditional altar created to celebrate life, honor loved ones and connect with family history.
  • Papel Picado Banners: Create a colorful papel picado square to add to the banners decorating LICM’s ofrenda. These traditional cut-paper decorations celebrate the beauty and fragility of life.
  • Paper Marigolds (Cempasúchil): Create a paper version of the bright marigold flowers traditionally used to decorate ofrendas and welcome the spirits of loved ones.
Recognizing that remembering loved ones can bring both comfort and complex emotions, North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center will be onsite to offer bereavement resources and activities to support families. The New York Life Foundation will also share information and resources, helping connect families with additional support.
By bringing families together through art, storytelling, and cultural traditions, LICM celebrates the importance of remembering loved ones, sharing family histories, and creating meaningful memories across generations.
