Southampton Arts Center (SAC) is pleased to host a film screening of The Right Whale on Thursday, August 13^th at 6:00 – 8:30 pm. 

The Right Whale: Tales of Resilience and Hope celebrates the enigmatic lives of right whales as they navigate the world’s oceans. We meet individual whales who are as intrepid as any human explorer and witness intimate moments between mothers and their calves. Filmed in collaboration with scientists worldwide, we gain a deeper understanding of how these magnificent creatures perceive their environment. The ocean has changed dramatically since right whales were thriving centuries ago. Southern right whales represent one of the greatest conservation success stories of our time, but their Northern cousins are in peril. The Right Whale explores the changes needed to revive an ocean full of giants.

The film will be followed by a reception and an engaging panel discussion with the filmmakers, Cheryl and Nick Dean, and Ecologist, Author, and Conservationist Carl Safina.

Tickets will be available for $20 for members and $25 for general admission.

ABOUT CHERYL AND NICK DEAN: 

Cheryl and Nick Dean are award-winning independent filmmakers and co-founders of Spindrift Images, a production company dedicated to telling powerful stories of the ocean and its wildlife.  Their documentaries, celebrated for their stunning imagery and compelling storytelling, have earned international acclaim and been featured by the BBC, the UN World Wildlife Day Film Showcase, and on Capitol Hill.  Their previous film The Witness Is a Whale was finished in 2021, and they completed The Right Whale in late 2025.  To extend the impact of their work, they founded Spindrift Images Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit using film, education, and strategic outreach to protect ocean wildlife and ecosystems.  They hope to inspire people to act in support of animal welfare, biodiversity, and wilderness conservation.  Cheryl has been effectively communicating scientific discoveries throughout her career and has been the president of the San Diego Undersea Film Exhibition since 2015.  Nick holds a science Ph.D. with over 30 years of research before turning to filmmaking.  They both started filming underwater before venturing topside to direct and produce together. 

ABOUT CARL SAFINA: 

Carl Safina’s lyrical non-fiction writing explores how humans are changing the living world, and what the changes mean for non-human beings and for us all. His work fuses scientific understanding, emotional connection, and a moral call to action. His writing has won a MacArthur “genius” prize; Pew, Guggenheim, and National Science Foundation Fellowships; book awards from Lannan, Orion, and the National Academies; and the John Burroughs, James Beard, and George Rabb medals. He’s been a featured guest of Bill Moyers, Martha Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Oprah Winfrey. He grew up raising pigeons, training hawks and owls, and spending as many days and nights in the woods and on the water as he could. Safina is now the first Endowed Professor for Nature and Humanity at Stony Brook University and is founding president of the not-for-profit Safina Center. He hosted the PBS series Saving the Ocean, which can be viewed free at PBS.org. His writing appears in The New York Times, TIME, The Guardian, Audubon, Yale e360, and National Geographic, and on the Web at Huffington Post, CNN.com, Medium, and elsewhere. Safina is the author of ten books including the classic Song for the Blue Ocean, as well as New York Times Bestseller Beyond Words: What Animals Think and Feel. His most recent book is Alfie & Me: What Owls Know, What Humans Believe. He lives on Long Island, New York, with his wife Patricia and their dogs and feathered friends.
