What Is Hunger Action Month?
“September is Hunger Action Month, when the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks unites to urge individuals to take action in their communities. It is our opportunity to create a movement that has a real and lasting impact on our mission to help end hunger in America.
Join us this September. As individuals, charities, businesses and government, we all have a role to play in getting food to those in need.” – Feeding America.org
Together Long Island we can help fight hunger right here in our own neighborhoods along with Long Island Cares. Long Island Cares is one of my favorite organizations on Long Island.
The organization was founded in 1980 by the late singer, Grammy Award-winning songwriter and social activist Harry Chapin.
“Their mission is to bring together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry on Long Island. They provide food when and where it’s needed, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency and educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. Their vision is a hunger-free Long Island.” – Long Island Cares
“Like” Long Island Cares on Facebook to see all the latest news and updates by this wonderful organization!
Volunteer just a few hours of your time with Long Island Cares and help make a difference in the lives of thousands of Long Islanders who are experiencing hunger, poverty or food insecurity. —-> Volunteer
Feeding America.org has a challenge for us and I think its something we should all give a try:
Take the SNAP Challenge:
Eat on just $4.50 a day. Shop for your meals with the daily average per person benefit provided by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as Food Stamps) to get a sense of some of the challenges faced by those struggling to put food on the table. Budget $4.50 for the day and share your experience with family and friends to raise awareness of the importance of this critical nutrition program.
*** Not only this month but every month donate whatever you can to our local Long Island Charity: Long Island Cares and help feed the hungry on Long Island! ***
