When most people think of summer, they think of fun in the sun. Going to the beach, swimming, and barbecuing with friends are all popular activities during the warmer months. However, if you’re looking for something a little different to do this year, why not visit a lake? Lakes can be just as much fun as the ocean, and they offer a variety of activities that you can’t find at the beach. Not to mention, you can usually find a lake close to wherever you are, and they are much less crowded. So, if you decide to head to a lake for your fun in the sun, here are some tips on how to make it most enjoyable:

Paddle Boarding

is a great way to enjoy a lake. It’s like surfing, but you use a paddle to propel yourself instead of riding on a wave. It’s a great workout and you can go as fast or slow as you want. It is also quite easy to learn, so even if you have never done it before, chances are you will quickly get the hang of it. All you need is a good paddle board,  some basic paddle boarding technique tips, and a life jacket—and you’re all set.

If you are looking to invest in your paddle board, there are a few things to consider. Inflatable boards tend to be less expensive, but they may not handle choppy water as well as rigid boards. Another inflatable paddle board vs solid board comparison is stability. Generally, inflatable boards are more stable, which makes them ideal for beginners or those that like to relax while they paddle. If this is your first time paddle boarding, don’t try to go too fast or do too many tricks right away. Keep it simple and enjoy your time on the water.

Kayaking

Kayaking is another great way to explore a lake while getting some exercise and a bit of an adrenaline rush. There are a variety of different kayaks to choose from, so you can find one that fits your needs perfectly. If you plan to go out with friends, there are tandem kayaks where two people can sit side-by-side. There are also single-person kayaks if you prefer to go solo.

When it comes to safety on the water, always wear a life jacket when kayaking—no matter how confident of a swimmer you may be. You’ll also want to make sure you have all the necessary safety equipment on board; such as oars, buoyancy aids, signaling devices, flares, etc. Additionally, check the weather before heading out to ensure that conditions will remain safe during your trip.

Fishing

Fishing is a great way to relax while enjoying the serenity of a lake. If you have your own fishing gear, you can bring it along and enjoy an afternoon of fishing on the lake. If not, there are usually many places around the lake where you can rent or buy all kinds of tackle, rods, and reels. Depending on the type of fish that inhabit your chosen lake, be sure to use proper bait as well as lures when fishing so you will have more success catching them.

In addition to having fun while fishing, you may also end up with some delicious catches for dinner—or even better yet—to share with friends! Just don’t forget to check the local regulations before heading out for fishing to make sure you don’t get in trouble.

Camping

For those looking for a longer stay, camping is another great way to experience the lake. Pack up your tent, sleeping bags, and camping supplies, and head out for a few days of fun under the stars. Many lake campsites have fire pits so you can enjoy campfires at night, as well as boat docks if you plan on bringing a canoe or kayak with you. Depending on where you go, some lakeside campsites even come equipped with bathrooms and showers—which makes the trip much more comfortable!

And if you want to spend the night out on the water, some lakes also offer houseboat rentals. These boats typically come with beds, bathrooms, and kitchens so you can enjoy a fully equipped floating home while on your lake vacation.

Swimming

Of course, you can’t forget to mention swimming when talking about ways to enjoy a lake. Whether you want to take a leisurely dip or get in some serious lap swimming, most lakes offer plenty of spots where you can jump right in and cool off. Just be sure to check the local regulations before taking a swim—especially if there are any “no-swim” zones around the lake. It is also important to make sure that the water quality is safe for swimming by checking with your local health department or visiting their website.

Keep in mind also, that swimming in the lake is not the same as swimming in a pool. Lakes can be unpredictable, with changing water depths and currents that you may not know about until it’s too late. It’s always best to stick to shallow areas if you are a novice swimmer and wear a life jacket for added safety when out on the lake.

As you can see, whether you opt to kayak, fish, camp, or swim, there are plenty of ways to enjoy a lake. So pack up your gear and head out for a day—or even an entire weekend—of fun and adventure. And, no matter what activity you choose while visiting a lake, safety should always be your top priority. Wear a life jacket, check the conditions before heading out and take all the necessary precautions to make sure you have a safe and enjoyable time!
