This is not only a fun craft to do with your kids but, it also includes a nature walk to look for the pinecones.
It is that time of year when you can find an abundance of pinecones on the ground when you go on a walk. If you want to gather some for a fun home craft or one to do with your child and their classmates at their holiday party at school, I highly recommend doing this.
A little back story to how this craft came about. So, a few years back I was the class Mom in my daughter’s class and the teacher asked to do a fun winter craft with the kids. However, there was no money to go out and buy anything extravagent so, I had to come up with something that really cost almost nothing to make. My youngest daughter loved to go on nature walks and collect little treasures along the way. She loved pinecones and thanks to her love for the pinecones and my love for painting this idea came to mind. I mentioned to her teacher the idea and she loved it since she already had paint in the classroom and ribbons if the kids wanted to make the pinecones ornaments to hang on their Christmas tree.
There is a good chance there is bugs inside the pinecones if you collected them on your nature walk so, I suggest baking them. Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil and spread pine cones across it in a single layer. Place the pine cones in the oven for 30 minutes or until the cones are fully opened and the sap has melted. Do not leave the oven unsupervised during this time, be alert for smoke or fire. Read more about how to bake your pinecones –> here
Once they are cool you are able to paint them. Add a ribbon and hang on your tree.
The kids are going to love this craft.
