8 Dangers That Could Be Lurking in Your Life

We all know that it’s important to take care of our physical and mental well being. But, lots of us make the mistake of only seeing what’s on the surface of what that truly means. You might eat well, exercise regularly and take personal time for your mental health, but what about other aspects of your life? There are dangers lurking around pretty much every corner that could jeopardise your health. So, let’s take a look at some of the hidden dangers that you should look out for.

Asbestos

One of the biggest unforeseen dangers in our lives is asbestos. If your home was built between the years of 1920 and 1970, there’s a good chance that asbestos was used to help insulate your home. The good thing is that asbestos isn’t dangerous when it’s untouched and broken. However, when it begins to fracture, tiny particles of asbestos fibres can do some serious damage to your health.

When breathed in, asbestos fibres lodge themselves into the lining of your lungs, which can exacerbate asthma and cause COPD, lung cancer, and other respiratory diseases. So, if you live in an old building it’s a good idea to have an asbestos inspection just in case. They will be able to detect and safely remove any traces of asbestos from your home before it does any long lasting damage to your health.

Also, if you work in an old building, ask your employer to check to see if there are any records of asbestos in the building. If not, encourage them to have it checked out so that you can rest assured you’re safe from asbestos wherever you are.

Alcohol, drugs and nicotine

As you already know, drinking alcohol is absolutely fine in moderation. However, when it becomes a habit or a need in your life, you’ve got a problem. That’s particularly true when you mix it with drugs and nicotine. All of these substances are highly addictive, and can cause many ailments, some of which can be fatal.

That’s why it’s important to get help as soon as possible if you find yourself abusing substances. Join an AA meeting, ask your Dr for help to quit smoking, and look for an effective cocaine treatment to kick the habit for good. While it might feel good at the time, it’s not worth risking your health or your wealth for a short-lived high.

Not only can substance abuse affect your health and put you into some serious debt, but it can also affect your job status. If you’re showing up drunk, high or hungover, you’re not going to be able to perform your role to the best of your abilities. While most of us have been hungover at work before, making it a habit could lead to you losing your job.

Sleep deprivation

It’s perfectly normal to want to stay up a bit later to have some me time, especially when you’ve got kids. You want to catch up on your TV programs or finish off a bit of work you put aside earlier in the day. However, not getting enough sleep can and will affect your brain function, making it difficult to perform tasks the following day. Again, we’ve all been tired at work before, but if you’re not doing your best work your job could be at risk.

It’s easier said than done going to bed and getting enough sleep at night, so if you struggle to fall and stay asleep, it’s time to put yourself into a sleep schedule. This means going to bed at the same time every day, and making sure that the environment you’re sleeping in is ideal. Make sure it’s not too hot or cold in your bedroom, and put away devices an hour before bed as the blue light can prevent you from being able to fall asleep.

You should also follow the same routine at night when it comes to thinking about going to bed. This could be going for a warm bath or shower, or you might find that a mug of tea helps settle you into a cosy slumber. Once you find something that works, add it to your daily routine. Many people find that reading in bed not only helps tire their eyes enough to fall asleep, but it also helps them dream nicer things and therefore stay asleep for longer.

If you really are struggling to fall and stay asleep for long periods of time, you might have sleep apnea. Speak to your Doctor about this as they will be able to provide you with treatment options to help you get the sleep you need.

Steroids

If you’re trying to build muscle mass, then there’s a good chance you’ve considered steroids to help achieve your muscle building goals. While using steroids to bulk up and get in shape might seem like a harmless habit on the surface, the steroids themselves can be extremely harmful to your health. You might begin suffering with bad acne and severe mood swings, but one of the biggest side effects is infertility.

While we’re not suggesting that you abandon your health and fitness goals, consider getting the protein from your food rather than a dangerous drug. Steroids can be really addictive, so if you’re struggling to give them up, make sure you get some help.

Gambling

While gambling doesn’t physically affect your health, it can also be a very dangerous route to go down. While betting a small amount generally doesn’t do any harm, it can be a very addictive habit to form. It’s too easy to tell yourself that you’re just going to have “one more bet” or buy “one more scratchcard”. The problem with gambling is that it leads you to believe you were really close to winning the jackpot when in truth, you have very little odds of winning large amounts of money.

Whether it’s scratchcards, betting on the races, or even playing instant win games on the lottery app, it’s important to put restrictions into place. Whether that means not carrying cash when you go to the shop or using the app’s restrictions is completely up to you. It’s also a good idea to speak to someone you trust about your problem so that they can help support you through giving up gambling – or at least putting stops in place.

Falls

We all fall from time to time, and most of the time we end up with a grazed knee or a big bruise for a week or two. However, falls can be very dangerous, and sometimes even fatal if you’re not careful. That’s why it’s important to make sure that there are no tripping or falling hazards at work and in your home. This means moving things away from stairs and making sure that there are no obstructions that could cause you to trip and fall.

It might seem like a really obvious thing to add to the list, but it happens more than you think. Even if you’re a healthy adult, one small mistake could lead to a large injury. People often think of falls as something that happens to the elderly, and while that’s true, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t err on the side of caution. Not only can falls damage your physical health, but time off work to recover from your injury will also mean a cut in your paycheck too.

Pests

Pests in the home are annoying enough just being around, but they can actually be very dangerous to your health too. Besides the fact that they are unsanitary, many pests also carry bacteria and diseases that could make you and your family very unwell. If you notice any signs like:

  • Droppings
  • Gnaw marks on wood
  • Scurrying sounds
  • Odd smells
  • Trailing grease marks

…then you need to make sure you fix the infestation as soon as possible. While there are at-home kits you can buy, you’re better off going with a pest control company to make sure they’re all gone and most importantly, don’t come back.

Electric shocks

Finally, we don’t need to tell you how dangerous electricity can be, but a surprising amount of people get shocked every year from electricity in their own homes. While it might seem easier to fix that broken outlet yourself, it simply isn’t worth your health. Not only could you get an electric shock that could seriously harm or even kill you, but not having your sockets wired properly is a fire hazard that could put you and your family at risk.

So, instead of bodging the job yourself, make sure you get an electrician in to do all of your wiring. It’s better to pay a professional to do the job properly than to risk anyone’s health to save a few bucks.

Life is a blessing, so make sure that you take care with everything that you do. Most importantly, keep an eye out for these 8 dangers that could be lurking in your life. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
