Okay, so summer is well and truly underway. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get some things done around the house before the summer break. True, when your kids go on vacation, you can enjoy some extra helping hands around the house, but a lot of parents like to get the important things out of the way first. This way, you can all have a great summer.
Create a List
Ideally, home maintenance should be a constant task. If you keep on top of everything, they won’t build up and lead to a huge job. They’re also less likely to get worse if you catch them early, meaning that you potentially save money as well as time.
But some things slip through the cracks. This isn’t the end of the world as long as you keep track of them. For non-emergency issues, you can make a note of them and save them for a big maintenance day where you get a lot of smaller jobs done at once. This has its ups and downsides, but it does work better for some people, especially if you rarely have chance to tackle things as they come up.
If you’re organized, you can make a list of the things that need to be done and also things you’d like to be done. This allows you to create a budget and save up for house repairs, while prioritizing some jobs over others.
HVAC System
The HVAC system keeps your home at a comfortable temperature throughout the summer and winter, depending on your needs. It also makes sure your home is well ventilated, which improves the air quality by filtering air coming into the house.
But if something goes wrong with the HVAC system, you need to fix it right away. Nobody wants to suffer through a hot summer without air conditioning. A damaged or non-functioning system can make you uncomfortable and can even be dangerous. Even a dirty system can cause issues, as it can get clogged up with dust.
It’s important to get a regular HVAC service to keep it in good condition, but especially if you notice a potential issue.
Doors and Windows
You should keep your doors and windows clean throughout the year, but sometimes it’s a good idea to look into replacement doors and windows. As they get older, the seal becomes less effective, meaning that you can spend more on utility bills trying to heat or cool a poorly insulated house. It’s best to do this before winter, so your home can stay dry.
Replacing doors and windows is also a safety matter, as you should replace the locks and handles so it’s harder to break into your home. As well as focusing on the exterior doors and windows, consider interior door handles as well.
Switching the handles out is an inexpensive and simple way to give your doors a new lease of life. They look different and can be more functional.
Painting and Decor
There’s nothing like a fresh paint job to make your home look much better and more fresh. If you want those summer vibes, then consider lighter and brighter colors that make the home feel larger and cooler.
The best thing about painting is, while interior decorators do a great job and can get it done more quickly, you can tackle it yourself. Simple book a day or weekend off so you can focus on painting a room or even more. Try to get friends and family to help, but always offer pizza or drinks for thanks.
You can also choose this time to switch up the decor. Whether you make major changes like switching out the floors and adding wallpaper, or you simply choose to move or buy some smaller decorative items, this is a necessary step to making a house feel like home.
The Outside
If you have some exterior space, try not to let it go to waste. Even a small space can add so much to your home. A bench or a small chair can give you somewhere to sit in a yard or balcony so you can soak in the sun. To add some greenery to a small garden, try potted plants and hanging baskets.
Or, if you have a big backyard, set yourself some projects like vegetable gardening or creating an outdoor dining area. You can even build an extension to get out of your home and add a bedroom or office.
