Whether you live in a busy city or a quieter town, finding a new place to live can be incredibly difficult. In fact, a recent study found that over 40% of renters lose sleep when searching for an apartment.
With that in mind, here are some top tips that you can use to make apartment hunting as stress-free as possible, even when competition is fierce!
Know exactly what you are looking for. From studio spaces to loft apartments, there are a lot of different options available to you when apartment hunting. As such, having a clear vision in your mind of what you want or need can prove to be useful, as you can narrow down your search somewhat. You should also be able to distinguish between needs and desires. For example, while you may want your apartment building to have gym facilities on site, you may have to settle for a place with a gym nearby instead.
On a similar note, it is important that you know exactly how much you are able to spend, whether you’re buying the space outright or renting it out. This again narrows down your options somewhat while also ensuring that you do not overspend and land yourself in a difficult situation further down the line. In some cases, it could be an indicator that you need to save up a little longer before committing to buying or renting a space, especially if you cannot find something you like on your budget.
Work with a realtor. Working with a real estate agent or realtor can also come in handy when apartment hunting, especially if you are moving to another state and know very little about the current housing market. After all, not only will they be able to arrange viewings on your behalf, but they will also have strong relationships with sellers, which could mean that you’re able to access a better price or deal overall.
Take your time. While you may need to move quickly (especially if you are moving to start a new job), it is important to remember that these things can take time. As such, you may want to look into alternative options if you can’t seem to find a flat that is the right fit. For example, it may be better to stay in temporary accommodation, such as an Airbnb, as opposed to signing a contract on a place that you do not truly love. You can always rent out a storage unit to store your belongings during this time if necessary.
Act quickly. Quality flats and apartments tend to get snapped up pretty quickly, especially in competitive markets. As such, it is important that you act quickly when you find a space you like, both in terms of arranging a viewing and making an offer. For example, you may want to set up alerts on housing sites for when a property that meets your needs becomes available. This way, you can get in ahead of others.
