Planting Cold-Tolerant Vegetables

Are you enjoying the warmer weather days and have the urge to plant some cold-tolerant vegetables and plants?

I always learn a lot of great tips when I head over and see my good friends at Olde Towne Gardens in East Setauket, NY. Long Island is considered zone 7 for planting. April can give us some really great days that get us excited to plant but, the nights can get really cold.

I learned from, Shawn Keane (owner of Olde Towne Gardens) that a plant might be cold-tolerant but, it doesn’t mean it is frost-tolerant. Let’s protect our crops thanks to this great tip of covering our plants on those really cold nights where frost is expected and uncovering them again in the morning. When you shop at your local garden center you can count on the expertise of the owners and employees who want you to succeed and have your plants thrive in your garden beds.

Watch the video below as Shawn tells us how to cover how crops on really cold nights and follow us and Olde Towne Gardens on Instagram.

Cold-tolerant vegetables that they had available when I visited were:

Lettuce (Iceberg and Red Sails), Cabbage, Cauliflower, Swiss Chard and Celery

and even a cold-tolerant Siberian Tomato Plant that I could not wait to purchase and plant at home.

Herbs: Parsley and Dill

(They are adding more varieties daily so when you visit, you will see first-hand the great selection)

What cold-tolerant vegetables will you grow this early Spring?

Head over to Olde Towne Gardens and purchase your cold-tolerant vegetables and plants from this incredible local family-owned garden center that we just love.
