6/6 & 6/7 11am Billy Joel Symposium
Devoted to the music, lyrics, themes, and cultural impact of Billy Joel. As one of America’s most influential songwriters and performers — and Long Island’s own — Joel’s body of work offers a unique lens through which to explore popular music, regional identity, and American culture. This symposium will gather scholars, critics, musicians, and students to engage in critical analysis of Joel’s artistry, life, and legacy.
6/6 7pm Dennis Arfa Induction
Dennis Arfa has been Billy Joel’s agent for over 50 years. As the Chairman of the Music Division of Independent Artist Group, Arfa has guided Joel’s career, including his record-breaking Madison Square Garden residency.
6/14 3pm Martha Trachtenberg and Tom Griffith
Tom Griffith and Martha Trachtenberg have been making (mostly acoustic) music together for forty-three years. Tom is an award-winning composer and producer. He’s written countless jingles—“Welcome to Millertime” and “I’ve Got that M&M’s Feeling” among them—and his music is on several film soundtracks. His CD, Forty Years Later, was Newsday’s Long Island Album of the Year when it was released in 2007. Current songs are being added regularly to tomgriffithmusic.com. Martha was in the first all-woman bluegrass band, the Buffalo Gals, in the ’70s, followed by the acoustic quartet Return to the Dream and, most recently, The Folk Goddesses. Her songs have been recorded by bluegrass luminaries including Tony Trischka, Missy Raines, Jim Hurst, and Greg Blake. Her 1999 CD, It’s About Time, won straight As from Newsday, and she’s assembling another album, with the working title Better Late Than Never. Together, their music spans genres from bluegrass to rock, with plenty of detours en route.
6/19 7pm Special Screening “Harry Chapin Cat’s In the Cradle”
HOF presents an encore performance of the film “Harry Chapin Cat’s In The Cradle”, a documentary revolving around the famous song by Long Island’s own Harry Chapin. On hand for this screening to discuss the film will be Harry’s son Jason Chapin, and the films producer S.A. Baron. For this event we will be accepting food donations for Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin Regional Food Bank.
6/28 3pm James O’Malley
This Center Moriches songwriter, for years, has composed some of the most endearing and relatable songs that a music lover could hear. Along the way, he’s appeared on TV, Radio, Concert Stages and Festivals throughout the area.
“…His soft voice and gentle finger style on the guitar enthralls the most jaded listener. The warm and intimate melodies that he crafts beautifully frame the direct and honest stories that he tells…”- Huntington Folk Music Society
“Over the course of an hour or so, James’ music elicits the same lumps in our throats, and smiles on our faces, that we’ve all experienced over many years.”- Todd Evans (He Bird She Bird)
“I can’t tell you how much the show meant to me. The songs are beautiful. They always affect me. You are a major highlight of my musical life.” -Jack Finkenberg (Eclectic Cafe)
