How to Help Your Aging Loved Ones Keep the Mobility

It is common for people when they are aging to be faced with mobility issues. However, this should not spell the end of having fun and undertaking their usual activities. While most of what they can do will be limited to their abilities, the care and support they get are crucial in promoting their capabilities. When our aging loved ones are faced with mobility issues, it becomes our responsibility to help them deal with their limitations.

Here are a few ways you can help an aging loved one who is facing mobility challenges.

1. Use Mobility Assistance Devices

Whether it is due to old age or illness, mobility challenges can be solved using mobility assistance devices. These may range from Electric Mobility Scooters to wheelchairs, and stairlifts. When getting a scooter for your loved one, remember to consider the purpose above all things. For instance, will it be used for a short distance, or do you need something your senior loved one can use at the airport? Also, don’t forget that they come in a wide range of sizes, features, designs, and weights. Before getting any mobility assistance device, ensure that it satisfies the needs of the user.

2. Providing Healthy Diets

The most common causes of mobility issues among the old are chronic diseases such as arthritis, obesity, and heart problems. One way to help them live healthy lives is by providing them with healthy diets. If your loved one suffers from arthritis, ensure they take plenty of leafy greens and calcium-rich foods that will promote the strengthening of their bones. Make sure you seek advice from a trained professional regarding the best foods to feed them so they are stronger.

3. Make Home Adjustments

You can also make some home adjustments, so your aged loved one finds it easier to move around the home. While at it, allowing them to maintain independence when moving around is crucial in strengthening their bodies. Some of these adjustments include:

  • Installing ramps
  • Installing benches and grab bars in bathrooms
  • Widening doors and lowering counters and cabinets

4. Encourage Physical Activities

Even if your loved ones have mobility troubles, they can still do a couple of things without any trouble. Staying physically active helps enhance seniors’ physical well-being while preventing other health conditions that arise due to lack of body exercise. Increased activity levels can help promote motion and balance. It strengthens body muscles while reducing pain and stiffness in the joints. Avoid exercising the parts of the body that are painful, so you don’t demoralize your loved one from exercising. Ensure there is someone to take them through home workouts to keep them fit and healthy.

5. Enroll Them in Support Groups

The worst impact that immobility can have on seniors is their mental well-being. They tend to feel helpless and sorry for themselves, which is not good for them anyway. Enrolling them in support groups gives them the hope and courage to still go on with their lives regardless of the challenges. They also receive advice on what they can do to improve their health.

Seniors often get mobility issues when they are aging. It is up to us to give them the support they need. The above tips should help you take care of your aging loved ones and help them stay mobile.
