Summer Safety Tips from a Nanny’s Heart

As a career nanny with years of experience caring for little ones through sunshine-filled days, I wanted to share a few summer safety reminders that help make this season as joyful—and safe—as it should be. Whether you’re at the beach, the park, or just enjoying your own backyard, summer fun always comes with a few precautions.

Here are my go-to summer safety tips from a nanny’s perspective:

1. Sunscreen Is Non-Negotiable

Apply SPF 30 or higher 30 minutes before heading outside, and reapply every two hours—or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. Don’t forget those easy-to-miss spots like ears, tops of feet, and the back of the neck. I always carry a mineral stick for quick touch-ups!

2. Hydration, Hydration, Hydration

Kids are busy running, playing, and sweating—and often forget to drink water. I like to keep their water bottles chilled and close by. A fun tip: Let them decorate their bottles with stickers so they’re more likely to grab them!

3. Watch the Water

Whether it’s a pool, ocean, or splash pad, constant supervision is key. Even strong swimmers need eyes on them. I never let myself get distracted, not even for a text. Drowning is often silent—and it can happen quickly.

4. Heat Safety Matters

On especially hot days, I schedule outdoor play in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun isn’t at its peak. Midday is great for indoor crafts, reading, or a cool movie break. I also keep a watchful eye for signs of heat exhaustion: flushed cheeks, fatigue, or irritability.

5. Bug Bites & Boo-Boos

Mosquitoes love summer as much as kids do. I use kid-safe insect repellent when we’re out in the evenings or in wooded areas. And I keep a mini first-aid kit in my bag—because scraped knees are part of the fun, right?

6. Helmet Up!

Bikes, scooters, rollerblades—whatever wheels your kids are riding this summer, helmets are a must. Bonus points for elbow and knee pads. And yes, I lead by example and wear one when I join in on the fun!

7. Create a Summer Routine

Even with more freedom, children thrive with structure. A loose routine that balances fun, rest, meals, and learning keeps everyone happier and more cooperative throughout the day.

A Final Note from Your Nanny

Summer is magical. It’s a season of memories, laughter, and adventure. But it’s also a time to stay alert, be prepared, and make safety part of the daily rhythm. As someone who loves and protects children like they’re my own, I always lead with love—and a healthy dose of precaution.

Wishing all my fellow parents and caregivers a sunny, safe, and joy-filled summer!

With care,

Lucille

  1. Love this! Summer is such a magical time for kids, but it’s easy to forget how quickly little ones can get overheated or sunburned. Thanks for sharing these gentle reminders — it’s clear your years of experience truly shine through in how thoughtfully you care for children’s well-being.
