Help my child has bad breath!

My toddler is not even 2 years old yet and loves to brush her teeth.

But, for the past week I have noticed she has a sour milk smell to her breath. It is not unbearable but it is there. The weird thing is she does not drink milk but gets calcium other ways through yogurt and cheeses.

I looked up causes and I see a lot of reflux responses but she does not have reflux issues only has the bad breath symptom.

Is this normal? Does anyone else’s child have bad breath?

  1. I am a Dental Hygienist, that being said bring her to a (pediatric) Dentist. There they will be able to tell you if it is coming from her mouth or not. Though she loves to bush she is however only 2 and may be doing it improperly leaving bacteria behind. Brushing the tongue is sometimes a simple solution too. You can do this with her toothbrush and water (or a fluoride free toothpaste), or a clean damp wash cloth, just have her stick out her tongue and get at it ;). Also; believe it or not, many children at this age do have interproximal decay (cavities in between the teeth), or just decay in general. Baby teeth are very weak and are more susceptible to decay than those of adults. If she does not have adequate spacing and you are not flossing her teeth regularly this is unfortunately a possibility. Decaying anything smells badly. I hope this is not the case, but if it is they will be able to fix it before it becomes a bigger problem. If it is not the case they may be able to trouble shoot with you and come to a conclusion. Unfortunately she is too young to brush or rinse with anything strongly flavored (i.e. Listerine, or a minty fluoride toothpaste) that she may potentially swallow. I hope this was helpful. -AJP, R.D.H.

  2. The cheese and yogurt will be the cause. Stop the cheese and yogurt for 3 days and see how the breath changes. Make sure baby has not stuck something up the nose. Oraltech Labs worked for my bad breath and I think I tried most other products on the market. It’s not easy as the program has you treating all causes of bad breath just in case your suffering from any one cause and don’t know it. However when I had bad breath I lost many job opportunities and all my friends so I was happy to follow the program just to get my life back. Anyway it’s worth it to cure bad breath.
