Nourish : The Definitive Plant-Based Nutrition Guide for Families

I am loving Nourish: The Definitive Plant-Based Nutrition Guide for Families. This guide written by Reshma Shah, MD, MPH and Brenda Davis, RD is a great way to begin your plant-based diet transition. The health benefits of transitioning to a mostly plant-based diet can be easier than you think. Eating plant-based is not only great for your family’s individual protein intake but, it is great for everyone’s fiber intake, as well. Did you know that eating plant-based is great for our planet? It is one of the most sustainable ways we can eat.

We try and eat together as a family as much as we can. It is a time that we can not only catch up and hear about each other’s day but, it is a time where my husband and I can incorporate plant-based dishes into our meal times so that our girls can transition to a more plant-based diet finding foods they love. Another way I have sparked interest in my girls on going on this plant-based journey is by having them help me in the kitchen.

Here is a great excerpt from the book:

“In addition to serving as a time and space to connect, family meals also offer a protective shield for our children in three broad ways: intellectual functioning, physical health, and mental health. If we could provide in a pill what regular, positive family meals can offer, every parent in the neighborhood would be lining up for a prescription. In fact, some researchers suggest that “family meals have more to do with adolescents’ positive outcomes than socioeconomic status, family structure (two-parent, one-parent, multi-generational), after-school activities, tutors, or church.” The research around family meals can be complicated because families that are able to participate in regular family meals may differ from families who are unable to. Many studies do correct for variables such as socioeconomic status, family structure, and race/ethnicity. Despite these challenges, numerous favorable outcomes for children have been attributed to frequent family meals. Regular, positive family meals can help to support our children in many ways. “

What I love about the book is the plant-based recipes! The girls and I are loving them and incorporating them in our daily meals. The girls love going to our local markets and picking out new veggies and fruits to try.
