STEM Weekend at Long Island Children’s Museum Inspires Exploration, Innovation and Environmental Discovery
Two Days of Hands-On Activities Connect Kids to Science and the World Around Them
Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM) invites families to explore, experiment and imagine during STEM Weekend, taking place Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19 from 11 am to 3 pm each day.
Designed to spark curiosity and creativity for children ages 3 and up, STEM Weekend brings together scientists, educators, artists and environmental leaders from across Long Island for two days of interactive experiences that connect children to the world around them through science, technology, engineering and math.

All Weekend Highlights | 11 am – 3 pm
Throughout both days, families can explore:
- Seining: Natives vs. Invasives (Both Days): Learn about Long Island’s coastal ecosystems, the importance of environmental stewardship, and this type of fishing through interactive activities led by Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center.
- Tip: Seining is a method of fishing that uses a large net, called a seine, to encircle and capture fish by suspending the net vertically in the water with floats on top and weights on the bottom.
- Green Teens Future Lab (Both Days): Collaborate and dream big in a workshop focused on imagining and building a better future.
- Bees & Rain Gardens (Both Days): Discover the vital role of pollinators while creating bee- and flower-inspired projects with the Sisters of Saint Joseph Ecology Team.
Saturday only, April 18 | 11 am – 3 pm
Saturday’s programming highlights innovation, art and environmental science:
- BioBus Mobile Lab (sponsored by National Grid)
Step aboard a mobile science lab and use high-powered microscopes to explore bugs, plants and even your own world up close.
- Earth Paint Studio (Artist Christie Jones)
Create art using handmade paints from natural earth pigments in a unique blend of art and science.
- Shinnecock Bay Hope Spot
Learn how science and Indigenous knowledge are working together to restore local waters and marine life.
Sunday only, April 19 | 11 am – 3 pm
Sunday focuses on sustainability, conservation and hands-on discovery:
- Balloon Mission: Reuse & Create
Transform recycled balloons into one-of-a-kind artwork while learning about environmental responsibility.
- Planting Microgreens (Cornell Cooperative Extension)
Plant and take home your own seeds and explore how food grows from farm to table.
- Marine Science Exploration (Atlantic Marine Conservation Society)
Investigate marine mammals and sea turtles through engaging research-based activities.
- Build a Kelp Forest (Shinnecock Kelp Farmers)
Contribute to a collaborative underwater habitat while learning about ocean ecosystems and sustainability.
“This year’s STEM Weekend is all about introducing children to the idea of a sustainable future,” said Claire D’Emic, LICM STEM Initiatives Program Director. “By connecting children with real scientists, artists and environmental advocates, we’re helping them see themselves as problem-solvers, creators and future changemakers.”
All activities are free with Museum admission.
