How to Help a Loved One Overcome Depression

Depression is a condition that affects the lives of millions of people all around the world. In the United States, it is especially common. More people are feeling down than ever before in our nation’s history. Levels of depressed and anxious individuals peaked during the COVID-19 pandemic and its ensuing lockdowns and have not come down by a significant amount since. This post’s intention is to help you work with your depressed loved one to work through their condition and ultimately come out the other side feeling positive, fulfilled, and happy.

Getting A Formal Diagnosis

The first thing that you need to do for your loved one is to get them a formal diagnosis. You can do this by taking them to a psychiatrist, who will be able to talk them through their symptoms and help them arrive at a definitive conclusion. There are many different forms of depression, which is why it’s important for your loved one to receive a diagnosis from a professional psychiatrist. Some examples of different forms of depression include manic, seasonal, and persistent.  In addition to offering diagnoses, only an expert can help someone with seasonal depression, or the other kinds listed above.  Under no circumstances should you ever attempt to diagnose your loved one yourself. Diagnoses should be left to a professional psychiatrist with a wealth of experience in diagnosing people’s mental disorders and problems. Attempting to diagnose a loved one yourself could lead to you making mistakes and influencing their behavior or decisions as it relates to their mental health.

In order for your loved one to receive a diagnosis, you need to take some time to find the most experienced and professional psychiatrist that you can. You do not necessarily have to find a psychiatrist in your area as there are lots of operating on the Internet. If you are going to work with an online psychiatrist, then you need to make sure that you take some time to read their reviews. A psychiatrist’s reviews will tell you everything you need to know about them. A lot of people make the mistake of paying for psychiatric support without first reading reviews. If you do not read your chosen psychiatrist’s reviews before hiring them, you could end up committing money to working with somebody who’s simply not worth the investment. Read independent reviews, not approved testimonials.

Lifestyle Changes

If you want to improve your loved one’s mental health  (and help them overcome depression), you can begin by assisting them in making lifestyle changes. Oftentimes, depression is caused by people’s lifestyles, i.e., they spend too much time sitting around, do not exercise enough, or do not have fulfilling social lives. Making lifestyle changes can improve your loved one’s life significantly. Of course, if you are unsure what changes they should be making, you can always get in touch with a psychiatrist and ask for their support. Take the same precautions outlined in the previous section as it relates to finding a psychiatrist.

An alternative to paying for a psychiatrist’s advice is to read online guides. There are an almost endless number of online guides available for you to view and use. Something you need to remember is that your loved one’s mental health needs to be dealt with according to the facts. In other words, while guides can provide useful information, you need to tailor the help you give your loved one around their personal issues. Your loved one’s mental health issues are unique to them and therefore need to be treated that way.

Understanding Causes

As mentioned in the previous section, lifestyle issues can sometimes cause people to feel depressed. If your loved one’s depression has been caused by poor lifestyle choices, now’s the time to encourage them to take action. Of course, you need to actually sit with your loved one (and a psychiatrist) and talk to them before you can definitively state that their problems are being caused by specific lifestyle habits that they have. Unless you are a mental health professional, it is not your place to decide that your loved one’s lifestyle is making them depressed, that is, unless it is painfully obvious.

One of the main reasons that people in the modern day feel depressed is because they hate their jobs. It’s normal for a person to hate their job. If your loved one does hate their job and is having some difficulty finding work, why not help them? Of course, before attempting to find work for your loved one, obtain their permission. You’ll likely also have to have a copy of their resume to hand. If you do not have a copy of their resume, you are not going to be able to apply for jobs for them.

Avoiding Triggers

People suffering from depression have a tendency to have triggers. A trigger is a situation or event that can bring up unwanted, negative emotions. Individuals who are suffering from depression can have lots of different triggers. Certain triggers might be the catalyst for different mental health responses, too. For example, depression and anxiety often cross over with each other. Some depressed people might encounter a situation or event (or somebody might bring something up) and they might then go on to experience feelings of anxiety or paranoia. You need to be careful when you are around your loved one so that you do not end up bringing up triggers.

A good way to ensure that you do not accidentally bring up any triggering events or any of your loved one’s triggers is to ask them what they are. When you are asking your loved one what their triggers are, be sensitive. Understand that they might not be willing to talk about their triggers with you. If they get closed off when you are asking, do not push them. You may want to suggest that they write their triggers down on a piece of paper and leave it somewhere for you, so you can read about their triggers without directly having to talk to them.

Depression is a very hard disorder to live with. If it’s something your loved one is experiencing, you need to take action and help them work through it. Individuals suffering from depression are significantly more likely to commit suicide or self-harm than other people.
