We had the pleasure of attending one of the kids programs at Old Westbury Gardens. Every Saturday at noon you and your child(ren) can enjoy a different themed program.
They have a wonderful line-up for 2018 and we highly recommend attending.
We attended the Eat Up! What’s Cookin’ in the Gardens: Edible “Soil” on Saturday, April 14th, 2018 and it was not only fun but, DELICIOUS! Both Ms. Lisa and Ms. Katelyn were fantastic with the kids. They kept them engaged while educating them about the topic of the week which was soil.
We began our program right outside of the Westbury House and then walked through the gorgeous landscape to each activity/ lesson. The first thing we did was learn the difference between soil and dirt. The kids were given shovels and were able to do some digging to see the differences between the two. My daughter was so excited she found a worm. We learned a fun fact, too. There are more than one million earth worms in one acre of soil. So cool, right?
We did some fun activities in between that kept the kids active and part of the learning. The girls loved dressing and acting the part of the mole and ant who both go underground. We learned what body parts help them underground. The mole uses their large paws to dig and the ants use their antennas to guide them.
We explored the gardens some more as a group.
Then, we headed indoors for our yummy activity. I loved that the edible soil was in layers just like real soil. The marshmallows were the bedrock, the rice kripies/ chocolate chip mix was the subsoil, the pudding was the topsoil and the oreos were the gravel and loose rock on top.
The end result looked like soil but, didn’t taste like it. The girls want to make this more often at home and I think we will and will have to add a gummy worm on top to remind us of when we found the worm in the soil.
A delicious treat at the end of our OWG KIDS adventure.
