There can be little doubt that water is good for us. Since the human body is about 60% water, that’s probably not a huge surprise to anyone. The benefits of drinking enough water are well-known. It’s good for brain activity, losing weight, keeping healthy, and staying energized.
However, did you know that according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM), women should drink 0.71 gallons (2.7 liters) of water and men a staggering 0.98 gallons (3.7 liters)? The upside is that you don’t have to drink only water to get your daily intake. Tea, coffee, juices, fruit and vegetables, and milk are all good sources. The downside is you still need to drink about 0.53 gallons of water (2 liters) as a woman and 0.79 gallons (3 liters) if you are a man. When drinking so much water, a new problem arises and that is the quality of the water you are drinking.
Water quality in your home
It is important to understand that the water coming out of the faucets in your home must be of high quality. If you’re drinking as much water as NASEM recommends, you don’t want water that’s full of contaminants. I know what you’re thinking, but just because you live in a country like America, it doesn’t mean that your water is safe.
Drinking water quality in the USA
While it is true that America’s drinking water is generally safe, that does not mean that it cannot contain contaminants that are potentially dangerous. According to the Environmental Working Group, 43 states in America are affected by highly toxic fluorinated compounds known as PFAS. If you click this link, you can check if you live in an area with PFAS. And if you live in California, the situation seems pretty dire too. From the New York Times, “more than 300 public water systems in California serve unsafe drinking water, according to public compliance data compiled by the California State Water Resources Control Board”.
How to remove contaminants
While your tap water may not be the best, the situation can be easily corrected by installing a water filtration system. With the simple addition of a reverse osmosis water filter, you can sleep easy at night knowing that the water you’re drinking at home is of the highest quality. So, what is reverse osmosis and why is it so beneficial?
The process of reverse osmosis is quite complex. All you have to know is that it extracts contaminants from water by forcing it through a special type of membrane with very tiny pores. The contaminants remain on one side of the membrane with the purified water on the other.
