Elizabeth Hashagen (News 12 Long Island) and Anne Caminiti ( Momee Friends of Long Island ) show you how to turn an old t-shirt into a durable bag and how to make fun necklaces for anyone to wear out of washers.
Upcycling is so much fun. Turn the old into new in a few simple steps. I bet you will not be able to stop making these once you give these crafts a try!
T-shirt Bags
Materials needed:
An old t-shirt
Scissors
Fabric Paint or Markers (optional)
A no-sewing required craft that is fun for tweens, teens and adults. This craft is fun for girls and boys. Make a sports bag , gym bag, or a fashionable bag for your belongings. Use any shirt you would want to use it can be a solid or graphic tee. Make sure it is an adult size shirt (large, XL or larger work best). These sizes make larger bags to hold the items you may want to store in them.
Directions:
First, turn your t-shirt inside out. Then, fold it in half.
Cut the sleeves off the t-shirt.
Then, cut off the collar of the shirt.
Cut off about an inch of the shirt bottom. Put that piece aside we are going to use it, now.
Pull the bottom of the shirt together and tie it with the inch of t-shirt you cut off.
Cut off some of the extra length once you have the knot around the material of the shirt.
Turn the bag inside out and Voila! You have made your bag.
Decorate it any way that you like or leave it be. I added our Momee Friends Sun on the front.
Momee Friends has a group of kids ages 8 to 12 years old with our Discover LI youth group who have been making these bags throughout their summer program. Once complete the bags are being used to collect non- perishable items for LI Cares food pantries. The group has been inspired by their junior mentor, Lana Moreno of Lana’s Hunger Dream.

Washer Necklaces
Make a fun, fashionable necklace for boys or girls to wear.
Materials Needed:
Flat Washers
Nail Polish
Embellishments of your choice (optional)
Necklace Cord
Directions:
Decorate the washers with nail polish and embellishments for a fun and unique fashionable craft.
