DIY Hungry Hungry Hippos Costume

These adorable and bright costumes make for such a cute group costume.

Making these four costumes is not only fun but, they will each look different not just in color but in the face expression of the hippo, too.

Materials needed:

4 plain colored caps ( all different colors) I bought them at the craft store

4 t-shirts  (the same four different colors that match the caps)

1 dress shirt box

foam sheet (black, white and one of each color shirt/ cap)

Construction paper (colors to match the colors of the caps and shirts)

White ping pong balls (12)

Black Sharpie Marker

Scissors

Hot Glue

Directions:

First, cut your white foam board into eight rectangles to make teeth for the Hippo.

Then, cut large eye shapes out of the white foam board. With a flat bottom and rounded top.

Then, cut your black foam board into quarter size circles for your eyes.

Put the foam pieces aside we will be gluing them later on. The next step is to cut the dress box into four equal pieces. Just by cutting the dress box in half you will have four equal pieces.

We want to cut the dome shape of the cap into the box since we will be gluing the box to the brim of the hat once we paint it.

Paint the box the same color as the hat with your acrylic paints. Let dry!

Once dry, glue the box to the top of the hat with hot glue. Hot glue the large white foam board eyes to the front of the dome of the cap. (seen below)

Then, hot glue the black circles to the white eyes, as well.

Find the color construction paper that best matches the color of your cap. You will be making the nostrils to glue on top of the front of the box. Cut two rectangle shapes of the construction paper and roll the rectangle piece to make a cylinder shape. Scotch tape the clyinder shape together than hot glue the nostrils to the top of the box.

Next, cut ear shapes out of the construction paper. Leave a long bottom so you can fold the bottom of the ear over to glue that piece to the top of the dome of the cap. Place them like I did in the picture below.

To finish the face of the hippo you just need to glue the two white rectangle foam board pieces to the underside of the box to make them look like teeth.

Now, make the Hungry Hungry Hippo Necklace:

The necklace background foam piece should match the color of the hippo. Glue a smaller white piece to the front of the colored foam piece. Write with Black Sharpie, I’m Hungry and glue 3 balls to the colored foam board. When you put the hot glue onto the ping pong ball use caution the ball will pop and the plastic of the ball will melt. Attach the ball instantly to the foam board and hold for 10 seconds. Allow to cool then add a punch hole to the center and add ribbon to make a necklace.

You will repeat these steps four times and on three more different colors. Get matching t-shirts the same color of the caps to complete your costume.

Isn’t the face adorable? I love how this came out.
