The South Street Seaport Museum announces Seaport Walking Tours, illuminating the hidden, forgotten, and overlooked histories of New York’s original seaport. Starting on Thursday, April 21, 2016 there will be two regularly scheduled tours available: The Secret Life of the Brooklyn Bridge and A Wicked Tour of the Fourth Ward. To commemorate the sinking of Titanic, a special limited run walking tour is only available on April 14, 15, and 16. Several new tours will be introduced after the Memorial Day weekend. Home to eccentric and dangerous characters, the Fourth Ward was the city’s district of vice and crime. Take a walk back to 19th Century New York’s wickedest ward.
Tours will be led by William Roka, Historian and Operations Associate at the South Street Seaport Museum. In addition to working at the Seaport Museum, Mr. Roka is also an independent scholar who has presented at several academic conferences in the United States and abroad. His research focuses on the history of transatlantic travel and ocean liners in the early 20th century.
